Collecting Bones (Exhumation)

Given the need for space (especially in large cities) in public cemeteries, the practice of exhuming the bones of the deceased after a certain period of time (usually three years) is applied.

The collection of the bones of the deceased (exhumation) is followed – according to the wishes of the family – by the etiquette defined by the religious, spiritual, and cultural tradition and the legal way (protocol) as provided for in our country.

For example, in the case of an exhumation, according to the standard of the Orthodox Christian tradition, the bones are placed on a white sheet after they have been cleaned with water and sprinkled with basil and wine and may be preceded by a trisago.

If you want an exhumation to take place, a first-degree relative or an authorized person with their identity card must come to the corresponding Municipal Cemetery where the burial took place or inform our office at least 15 days before the end of the three-year period to declare an exhumation.

If you want a burial extension, anyone interested should contact us or the corresponding Cemetery at least 15 days before the end of the three years and inform us about the desire-request for a burial extension.

If no one appears to declare an exhumation or an extension or renewal of an extension (extensions are for three months and are renewed before their expiration each time), then the municipal service will be in the unpleasant position of carrying out a forced exhumation.
