How much does a funeral cost in Athens?
The cost of a funeral in Athens depends on the services chosen by the family, the coffin, floral arrangements, cemetery, church and any additional services. Before arranging the funeral, we can provide detailed information about the available options and the estimated total cost, so you know exactly what is included.
What should I do when a loved one passes away?
The first step is to have the death officially certified by a doctor, hospital or other competent authority, depending on where and under what circumstances the death occurred. You can then contact the funeral home immediately. We will guide you through the transportation of the deceased, the necessary documentation and the arrangements for the funeral or cremation. Alexiou Funeral Services is available 24 hours a day.
What documents are required to arrange a funeral?
Typically, the medical certificate of death, the deceased person’s identity card or passport and the necessary information for registering the death are required. Depending on the circumstances, additional information such as the deceased person’s AMKA social security number and AFM tax identification number may also be needed. The funeral home can handle much of the process, including registering the death, obtaining the death certificate and arranging the burial permit.
What services does a funeral home provide when arranging a funeral?
A professional funeral home can take care of the transportation and preparation of the deceased, the necessary documentation, the burial permit, coordination with the cemetery and church, the coffin, hearse, floral arrangements, wreaths and any other services requested by the family. Alexiou Funeral Services can handle all of these arrangements and can organise both religious and civil funerals.
Am I entitled to funeral expenses from e-EFKA and what is the procedure?
In many cases, the spouse or the person who arranged and paid for the funeral may be entitled to funeral expense benefits from e-EFKA. Eligibility and the amount provided depend on the deceased person’s insurance status and former insurance fund. The funeral home electronically registers the relevant receipts and documents, after which the beneficiary may, where applicable, submit the application online.
How much does cremation cost and what is the procedure?
The total cost of cremation depends on the transportation of the deceased, the funeral home’s services, the farewell ceremony and any additional options chosen by the family. The funeral home can arrange the necessary documentation, coordinate with the crematorium and organise the transportation of the deceased. Alexiou Funeral Services provides cremation services and works with the crematorium in Ritsona.
Can a civil funeral be held instead of a religious funeral?
Yes. A civil funeral is a farewell ceremony without a religious service and can be arranged according to the wishes of the deceased and the family. It may be followed by either burial or cremation. Alexiou Funeral Services organises both religious and civil funerals throughout Athens and Attica.
How soon after death can the funeral take place?
The date and time of the funeral are determined once the necessary documentation has been completed and in coordination with the cemetery, church and family. The funeral home coordinates all the services involved and informs the family of the earliest available arrangements. Alexiou Funeral Services can take care of organising and confirming the date and time of the funeral.
Can the deceased be transported to another city, an island or abroad?
Yes. Transportation of the deceased can be arranged from Athens to any location in mainland Greece or the Greek islands, as well as repatriation to or from another country. International transfers require specific documents and permits, which the funeral home can arrange along with the transportation. Alexiou Funeral Services provides transportation of the deceased throughout Greece as well as international repatriation services.
When is the 40-day memorial service held and what is required?
The 40-day memorial service is an important tradition of the Orthodox Church and is usually arranged in consultation with the church and the family. Depending on your wishes, koliva, prosphora, candles, flowers and other services may be required. A funeral home can assist with organising and coordinating all the necessary details.
